I’ve Learned the Importance of Communication

As part of their rehabilitation, each Narconon client becomes a student of the specific life skills they are going to need to succeed in life after they go home. On one of these training courses, our students learn about the different components of simple communication between people so they can improve their ability to communicate. One at a time, these components are studied and then practiced to give our students greater competence and comfort while communicating. Each of these practice steps is called a “drill.” Among other skills, students learn to deliver their communications clearly, acknowledge another person effectively and express their own intention clearly and persuasively. Here is the statement from one of our students who completed these exercises.

At the start of the drills yesterday, I felt awkward and I had to force myself to continue the drill. That made me feel tired and uncomfortable. Thoughts from the past came up sometimes and I was also distracted by the drills of fellow students. But after the end of the drill, I felt relaxed, happy, positive, and talkative for the rest of the day. In fact, these positive things made me very excited and I couldn’t wait for the second session.

Today’s study session was totally different! I felt so good inside my skin and was relaxed and chilled the whole time. No discomfort at all, no distractions at all and I enjoyed just being there. And now after the drill, I feel energetic, I have a clear mind and I feel comfortable in my own skin. I am ready for the next drill!

I learned that the acknowledgment is just as important as the delivery of your own communication. The words used are just one aspect. But as important as the words you use is the way you say them. This includes the tone of voice, the facial expressions, and the intention behind the voice. The important thing is that the person you are talking with receives your acknowledgment fully and that it assures him that you truly heard and understood what he said.

I fully believe that this drill will help me in everyday life. I will be able to fully acknowledge a person who is talking to me. This exercise will be of great benefit in my communication skills!

The drill that taught me to clearly express my intention was simply amazing. At the beginning, I really saw how sensitive I am at the distractions in my surroundings. In the past, this made it very hard for me to accomplish anything. There was always an excuse to escape from the task ahead. I am totally convinced that the benefits I gained from this drill will be crucial for me, my future and my success in life.

I really enjoyed this course very much!
